"No pictures, please!"
The Joys of Photographing My Toddler
Time and time again, I have parents apologizing over and over when their dear little ones just won't cooperate during a session. I've heard "I'm so sorry. She never acts like this” more times than I can count. If you have ever been in this situation, you aren’t alone. I don’t know why, but there is something about a camera that seems to make toddlers loose their cool. Even Photographer's kids. I'll tell about a little session I had with my sweet, oh-so-happy-girl.
All sorts of Pinterest-Worthy visions were dancing in my head! Visions of her being a happy toddler, playing and being silly. Dressed-up. Jumping on the bed. ADORABLE! She loves jumping on the bed, so it should be easy keeping her happy, right? HA! She lasted about 3 minutes. After that, we were left to try every distraction we could think of to keep her happy and, well, on the bed.
Disclaimer: This whole photo-op was only about 15-20 minutes. She wasn't upset for long.
When her patience began wearing thin, dad tried to lift her spirits with some rough-housing. She loved the play, but it wasn't long before she tired of it...and tired out dad as well.
And then we brought out the big guns...the phone!
FaceTime makes her happy, but dashed my interest-perfect dreams.
Maybe holding the phone and just letting her see it will work. Negative. As you can see, that just made her mad, but we persevered... and then we gave in to the militant midget's demands.
It is hard work being adorable. After a break to play with the phone, she decided her dress was more entertaining. That's the thing with toddlers. If you can keep them from a meltdown, they will surely look adorable, no matter what they are doing.
Schedule that photo session with your toddler. They will probably be a little difficult at times, so be prepared for that. If you stay patient, enduring the meltdowns, taking a deep breath when having moments like these...
...then you might end up with a few photographs you love, like how I love this one.
...and of course this last one. Now I just have to decide which ones I want to hang on the wall. Who am I kidding, I'll have them all printed.
